Artist Bio

A native of Eastern Canada, DJ Mandelbrot (Rob Cooper) has become well recognized in his local tribe for unleashing cutting edge psygressive trance, always emphasizing the ‘trip’ and vibing with the energy of the dancefloor. Inspired by the raw beauty of nature, Mandelbrot specializes in long open-air sets that explore many moods on many tangents. Reverence for the awesome power of sacred (or fractal) geometry led Rob to choose the name “Mandelbrot”, in honour of the late great mathematician Dr. Benoit Mandelbrot, the man who coined the term ‘fractal’.

After finding his home in the Canadian psy landscape during its early days of the late 90s, Mandelbrot began to DJ in 2002 as a longtime member of the Blacklight Activists, who were fundamental in the Toronto scene. His taste in music and knowledge of the global trance community has been shaped by countless travels & events in such places as Portugal, Mexico, Thailand, and Japan, with many sick gigs along the way ))). Mandelbrot is also known for deep downtempo sets, flowing through various genres such as ambient trance, dub, and worldbeat. Today, Mandelbrot is a new member of the long established Shakti Collective, Toronto’s most influential psy promoting organization. In addition, Mandelbrot has co-founded the Solar Groove Network, with the aim of bringing more of the Zenon sound to the Toronto area. After years of sets centred on intelligent and eclectic progressive music, Rob is totally inspired and stoked to join the team and present the most killer music on the planet to Eastern North America!!
